The Rise of Breakfast Trends

In the late 19th century, breakfast in affluent American households began to mirror the lavish full English breakfasts enjoyed by the British elite. This shift saw the introduction of items like sausage, eggs, and baked beans on the morning table. Connecticut families, too, aspired to these opulent spreads, as the meal became less about sustenance and more about social status. However, this trend didn’t last long; health reformers soon advocated for lighter breakfasts, favoring fruits and whole grains, which reflected changing attitudes toward health and nutrition in the early 20th century.

"Apparently, Rodd's has been around for 35 years, this is my second visit in the last 4 years. It seems everyone around raves of this place. I had scrambled eggs over a biscuit and gravy, I didn't notice much or any sausage in the gravy. I also had their homemade corned beef hash, which was great and had onions. The prices were great, and the food tasted like grandma's or my Aunt Rhoda's, it made me feel right at home. The serving sizes were appropriate for the price, and I didn't walk out too stuffed. I enjoyed my breakfast and I'm looking forward to my next visit."

Historic Breakfast Beverages

Believe it or not, beer was once considered a breakfast staple! In colonial times, many families in Connecticut started their day with small beers or hard cider, as clean drinking water was often scarce. These beverages were seen as a way to provide nourishment and hydration before tackling the day’s work. As society progressed into the 19th century and clean water became more available, lighter breakfast drinks gradually emerged, paving the way for coffee and tea to take center stage. Today, while we might think of traditional beverages in a different light, this history reminds us of how breakfast habits evolve with society.

The Evolution of Cooking Methods

Cooking methods for breakfast have changed dramatically over the centuries. In early Connecticut households, breakfast was often prepared over open fires, with simple pots and pans. As technology advanced, so did cooking techniques, bringing about the use of stoves in the 19th century. This shift allowed for more elaborate dishes and quicker meal preparation, fostering a culture of efficiency. Today, you might find breakfast being whipped up in microwaves or electric griddles, yet the heart of the meal remains the same: to nourish and energize for the day ahead, reflecting a blend of tradition and modern convenience.
