The Industrial Age and Breakfast

As the Industrial Revolution rolled into the 19th century, breakfast underwent significant changes, particularly in Connecticut's growing towns. With more people working in factories, the first meal of the day shifted from hearty, home-cooked meals to quicker options. Breakfast began to feature lighter dishes, influenced by health reformers who promoted moderation and balance. This shift was partly a response to the fast-paced lives of workers, who needed something quick but nutritious to fuel their long days. The result was a blend of convenience and nourishment that shaped modern breakfast habits.

"A lovely little bakery in Centerbrook, CT; not too far from the Essex Steam Train. As a local, I really do quite enjoy coming here and seeing the new items that they feature on the menu on a daily basis. They feature seasonal items, so be sure to keep an eye out for what's the latest! The inside is well kept and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The decorations also change with the season, which makes the shop festive and fun. Their menu not only has sweet items, but savoury items as well. In the morning they feature breakfast sandwiches (on brioche or a croissant) as well as lunchtime sandwiches too. My personal favourite is the grilled cheese! A few notes I've made were that I found their iced tea to be consistently rather watery, so I've opted to not order that; and a few times I've found the macarons to be an overly sticky texture. Otherwise, everything I've had has been delightful and I continue to be a regular customer!"

"Went here because we were in the area. Small sandwich menu, but both were delicious. Took home a fruit tart and key lime tart. Took a bite of the fruit tart and, unfortunately, my husband was unable to get a bite. The berries were so fresh and sweet. (Guess he gets the key lime tart). Will be back soon!! Server ce was awesome, also!!"

"Savour has become a staple in our lives ever since we moved to Chester last year. Their sandwiches and baked goods are superb and so are their prepared foods. This establishment kept me going after I had my baby a little over a year ago and every time I’m too busy or just too tired to cook. Given our love for Savour, it only seemed appropriate to have them make my baby’s first birthday cake. I spoke directly with their pastry chef and she absolutely crushed the concept I had in mind. The cake and cupcakes were also incredibly delicious. I highly recommend Savour and we can’t wait to order this year’s thanksgiving dinner and desserts from them!"
