Breakfast's Humble Beginnings

Breakfast hasn't always been the hearty meal we enjoy today. In ancient times, it was about breaking the overnight fast, often with simple porridge or bread. Early American settlers brought these customs with them, relying on whatever was available, such as cider or leftovers from the night before. By the time Connecticut was established in the 1600s, breakfast often included basic staples like cornbread and stewed fruits, emphasizing sustenance over luxury. This simple start to the day laid the groundwork for the more elaborate breakfasts that would come to define later American culture.

History

From the Community

Red Rose Cafe has become a neighborhood mainstay in Colchester by leaning into hearty breakfast and lunch dishes, a packed pastry case and friendly, hands-on service.

The small footprint — counter ordering, a few tables and outdoor seating — means the kitchen turns out generous plates quickly, from sausage, egg and cheese bagels to crisp paninis.

Reviewers consistently praise the fried fish for its light, non-greasy coating and the fries for their seasoned, crispy exterior; one guest wrote that “the fries are the best I’ve ever had,” reflecting a common compliment about the sides (Vivian Nguyen).

Homemade desserts are a draw as much as the savory menu: pecan bourbon tart and fresh-baked cookies show up in many notes of praise.

Staff are often singled out for warmth and efficiency — Leslee Weiss called it a spot with “big personality and great food!” — which helps the cafe handle busy weekend crowds and regulars looking for reliable morning fare.

Patrons also celebrate standout sandwiches like the caprese panini and inventive items such as the locally beloved “Big Blue,” described by one diner who urged, “Go try the Big Blue, I could cry it’s so good” (jacquie lagace).

The result is a casual, food-forward cafe where generous portions, a sweet case full of temptations and dependable coffee keep people coming back.

"Love this place. 1st time experience and it was great. There were only 2 waitresses and they nailed service, quick and straight to the point. I definitely recommend their fish and chips. Big portions, enough to share among 2 people. The fries are the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly seasoned and the crispy exterior that most diners get with home fries. If you’re not in the mood for fish and chips, definitely add fries to any meal."

"Excellent breakfast and brunch place. It is small, but it makes sense for a local spot in a small town. I've eaten here several times now and I am yet to be dissapointed. This time I had the French Toast special 😋 french toast was moist, stuffed with apples and topped with whipped cream and spinkled with cinnamon. Got a side of bacon to offset the sweetness of the french toast. It was the perfect breakfasts. My friends had Western omelets that are their go to here for breakfast"

The Rise of Lavish Breakfasts

By the 19th century, affluent Americans sought to replicate the opulence of a full English breakfast, complete with bacon, eggs, and more. In Connecticut, this trend mirrored the growing wealth and social aspirations of the time. Health reformers began to push back against this trend, advocating for lighter, healthier options. This tug-of-war between indulgence and health reflected broader societal changes, highlighting how breakfast became a stage for social status and personal choices, ultimately leading to diverse morning traditions throughout the region.
