The Rise of Lavish Breakfasts

By the 19th century, breakfast transformed dramatically in Connecticut as wealthier households aspired to replicate lavish English-style breakfasts. This meant more than just a bowl of oatmeal; it included a hearty spread of bacon, eggs, sausages, beans, and even tomatoes. Health reformers at the time, however, pushed back against these rich meals, advocating for lighter, more health-conscious options. This tension between indulgence and health sparked a new era of breakfast, where households began to negotiate between comfort and wellbeing. The desire for a substantial morning meal mirrored the growing complexity of American life as people sought both nourishment and pleasure in their daily routines.

"Kickstart Cafe in Shelton, CT is a warm and welcoming mom-and-pop gem where everyone feels like family—guests greet each other by name, and the vibe is full of heart. I started with their hazelnut cream & sugar coffee, perfectly smooth and comforting, then tried the honey bee cortado—espresso blended with steamed milk, honey, and vanilla—a sweet, rich delight. The egg white omelette, packed with fresh veggies, turkey slices, and melty Swiss cheese, was served hot and bursting with flavor. The roasted home potatoes? Golden, crispy, and absolutely to die for. Stephanie and her team were so kind and attentive—truly top-notch service that made the experience even better. A must-visit spot for a cozy, satisfying meal!"

"We were in town overnight for a concert and weren't feeling the hotel breakfast so we ventured in town and were so happy we did. Super friendly and attentive staff. Great energy and we could tell it was a local favorite. Pretty much everyone was greeted by name. Omelets were delish and my sister said the decaf drip coffee was the best she has ever had!"

"Obsessed with this adorable spot in downtown Shelton! I talked to the owner who was so nice, and they’re super dog friendly so seeing all of the pups really brightened my day. It’s one of those spots where almost everyone is a regular and they all know each other, so it felt very community oriented! My fiancé and I grabbed a sunny table near the window and had such a delicious breakfast of avocado toast and the George’s sandwich with our coffees. I really liked the iced pumpkin one I had! I will definitely be keeping this spot in mind for future trips to downtown Shelton!"
